Legacy Week fundraiser proves a success
THE community dug deep last week as part of a nation-wide fundraiser to support the families of veterans.
Funds were raised across Australia as part of the Legacy Week appeal, which has been running since the 1940s in support of the families of those who served their country.
“We held our annual badge sales throughout the week and are very pleased and thankful for the community support,” Terang Returned and Services League sub-branch president Terry Fidge said.
“We’re thankful for the support of Legacy over the years, which is a non-government funded organisation, with the money raised throughout the week going to the families and widows of veterans.
“Legacy was formed after World War One, started by two mates on the Western Front – one was mortally wounded and he asked his mate to look after the missus and the kids.
“That was the foundation of Legacy which has continued on ever since, looking after the women and the children up until they finish university.”
The appeal supports the families of those who lost their lives or sustained injury while serving, with more than 34,000 partners and children across the nation receiving support.
“Without any major conflicts, the numbers of dependants are slowly diminishing but there is a real cause for Legacy to continue,” Mr Fidge said.
“We thank the community for their support.”
Lorrie Connellan was among those raising funds when selling a range of Legacy badges, pens and teddy bears in Terang last Thursday and Friday.
“It has been a good to see a lot of support from the community,” he said.
