Match win for Western Waves
WESTERN Waves won its first VCCL under 18 championship match last weekend.
The Waves defeated South East Sharks by nine wickets on Sunday.
Batting first at Warrion Oval, the South East Sharks could only manage 126 runs off 30 overs in its first innings.
The early bowlers had the Sharks under pressure as they limped to 3-16 and 4-58 before Cobden’s Parker Walsh got the ball in his hand.
Walsh finished with figures of 5-38 from eight overs – a spell that kept the opposition well under wraps.
The Waves took to the crease and batted sensibly from the outset.
Cobden’s Jonty Robertson (10) and Brock Gannon (40 not out) reached a 28-run partnership before they were separated.
When skipper Eddie McShane (62 not out) took control it was only a matter of time before the Sharks’ score was overtaken.
This happened in the 28th over, with only one wicket down.
The Waves will face Barwon in round two of the championship this Sunday, November 17 on the turf wicket at Camperdown.
A win will put them in the final against the top team in the northern pool.
