Merry Christmas: Students at Mortlake’s schools put on a wonderful performance last Friday as the community celebrated the festive season at the town’s annual Christmas Carols.

Hundreds of people filled Market Square to enjoy the beloved event headlined by performances from St Colman’s Primary School and Mortlake College students, performing delightful renditions of their favourite Christmas carols.

There was a slew of performances from local musicians while the children made the most of the free activities on offer including face painting, a jumping castle, wildlife exhibition and merry-go-round.

Mortlake Lions Club president Heather Rowe said the Lions club, as organisers of the event, were delighted to see another successful year.

“There were quite a few people there,” she said.

“It went really well - and it was definitely full on.”

Mrs Rowe said the performances had been wonderful, particularly from the students who had worked hard to practice.

“The kids were great - they always are,” she said.

“There were some funny ones among them and they enjoy it.

“We would love to get the kindergarten involved, they’d be gorgeous.

“It was very good.”

This year, the Mortlake Lions incorporated a festive decoration around the stage, enhancing the vibrancy on offer at Market Square.

Mrs Rowe thanked all the volunteers who had worked hard to ensure the smooth running of the evening.

“The stage looked fantastic - the people who decorated it did a wonderful job, and it was just an added bonus,” she said.

“We’ve never had it decorated so that was lovely.

“Thank you to everyone who put in, and hopefully next year we’ll have a bigger and better event.

“We hope to have more entertainers next year.”
