Students experience a taste of business
Derrinallum P-12 College Vocational Major (VM) students were recently given the opportunity to explore various careers in Camperdown.
Through the Neil Porter Legacy, students were given the opportunity to speak with business owners and employers about their industries and career pathways.
Derrinallum P-12 College teacher Jess Nibblett said the VM students explored a variety of businesses through the industry immersion excursion.
“We went to the Loaf and Lounge bakery and spoke to the manager. She was fabulous – that business is amazing,” she said.
“We got a tour through the whole place and heard about what they’re looking for in job skills and what they do.
“We then went to the Corangamite Shire Council and heard about 10 different careers and what people do, about their career pathways, training pathways and that sort of thing.
“Then we went to the chemist and had a look at what they do and what a pharmacist does and all the different roles.
“Then we went to a dairy farm – Adam Robertson at Tesbury – and he just spoke about the dairy industry and what they do.”
Ms Nibblett said the students enjoyed the opportunity, and more business visits are planned for the coming months.
“They like a day out, and they like going to different places and seeing what’s going on,” she said.
“They’re hearing the same messages I’ve been saying in class from different mouths – things about employability skills, what employers are after, just the different industries and pathways that are out there.”
